The Act was signed by all twenty representatives , chaired by Jonas Basanaviius . The Act of February 16 was the end result of a series of resolutions on the issue, including one issued by the Vilnius Conference and the Act of January 8. The path to the Act was long and complex because the German Empire exerted pressure on the Council to form an alliance. Neotropical Migratory Birds: Natural History, Distribution, and Popula
$35.89 Thrushes, warblers, vireos, and tanagers are probably the most familiar of the Neotropical migrants - birds that breed in the United States and Canada, then journey to spend the winter in the Caribbean, Mexico, or southward. But this extraordinary group actually comprises a large number of diverse species, including waterfowl, shorebirds, terns, hawks, flycatchers and hummingbirds. In their compendious review of information on these birds, Richard M. DeGraaf and John H. Rappole illuminate the need for a thorough understanding of the ecology of each species, one that extends throughout the entire life cycle. The authors argue convincingly that conservation efforts must be based on such an understanding and carried out across a species' range - not limited to the breeding grounds. This book is the first to summarize in one volume much-needed practical data about the distribution and breeding habitat requirements of migratory birds in North and South America. The body of the book consists of natural history accounts of the more than 350 species of Neotropical migrants, including a brief description of each bird's range, status, habitats on breeding grounds, nest site, and wintering areas. The authors provide a complete range map of each species' distribution in the Western Hemisphere as well as notes on the distribution - basic data that until recently have largely been unavailable in usable form to ornithologists and land and resource managers. An appendix lists species that are increasing or decreasing at significant rates in various physiographic regions of North America. This book is the first to summarize in one volume much-needed practical data about the distribution and breeding habitat requirements of migratory birds in North and South America. Ecology and Management of Neotropical Migratory Birds: A Synthesis and
$55.59 The apparent decline in numbers among many species of migratory songbirds is a timely subject in conservation biology, particularly for ornithologists, ecologists, and wildlife managers. This book is an attempt to discuss the problem in full scope. It presents an ambitious, comprehensive assessment of the current status of neotropical migratory birds in the U.S., and the methods and strategies used to conserve migrant populations. Each chapter is an essay reviewing and assessing the trend from a different viewpoint, all written by leaders in the fields of ornithology, conservation, and population biology.brIntroduction,emMartin & Finch/embr1. Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds
$4 DIVBird migration is the world's only true unifying natural phenomenon, stitching the continents together in a way that even the great weather systems fail to do. Scott Weidensaul follows awesome kettles of hawks over the Mexican coastal plains, bar-tailed godwits that hitchhike on gale winds 7,000 miles nonstop across the Pacific from Alaska to New Zealand, and myriad songbirds whose numbers have dwindled so dramatically in recent decades. Migration paths form an elaborate global web that shows serious signs of fraying, and Weidensaul delves into the tragedies of habitat degradation and deforestation with an urgency that brings to life the vast problems these miraculous migrants now face.iLiving on the Wind/iis a magisterial work of nature writing.BR/divDIVA fascinating book, unusually well written, about a truly astonishing phenomenon.--Peter MatthiessenBRBRMr. Weidensaul translates difficult scientific concepts into understandable English while artfully interweaving personal experiences into the larger natural-history story . . . Bird Migration
$59.98 The aim of this book is to give a general overview of the whole subject of bird migration. After a chapter describing the Earth's climate and ecosystem, the book is divided into three main sections. The first presents the life histories and migratory habits of nine different ecological categories of birds. The second section deals with the course and timing of the flight journeys, flight behavior, fuel economy, flocking, and the hazards from disorientation and predation. The final section covers the ways that birds navigate and shows that this process is still by no means fully understood. |

Migratory Settings.
$91.13 'Migratory Settings' proposes a shift in perspective from migration as movement from place to place to migration as installing movement within place. Migration not only takes place between places, but also has its effects on place, in place. In brief, we suggest a view on migration in which place is neither reified nor transcended, but 'thickened' as it becomes the setting of the variegated memories, imaginations, dreams, fantasies, nightmares, anticipations, and idealizations of both migrants and native inhabitants that experiences of migration bring into contact with each other. Migration makes place overdetermined, turning it into the mise-en-scne of different histories. Hence, movement does not lead to placelessness, but to the intensification and overdetermination of place, its 'heterotopicality.' At the same time, place does not unequivocally authenticate or validate knowledge, but, shot-through with the transnational and the transcultural, exceeds it ceaselessly. Our contributions take us to the migratory settings of a fictional exhibition; a staged political wedding; a walking tour in a museum; African appropriations of Shakespeare and Sophocles; Gollwitz, Germany; Calais, France; the body after a heart transplant; refugees' family portraiture; a garden in Vermont; the womb. With contributions by Mieke Bal, Maaike Bleeker, Paulina Aroch, Astrid van Weyenberg, Sarah de Mul, Annette Seidel Arpaci, Sudeep Dasgupta, Wim Staat, Maria Boletsi, Griselda Pollock, Alex Rotas, and Murat Aydemir. |

Millions of birds migrate, often over very large distances, to benefit from seasonal resource surpluses and to avoid predators and competitors. The aim of this study is to survey the phenomena. The aim of this book is to give a general overview of the whole subject of bird migration. The final section covers the ways that birds navigate and shows that this process is still by no means fully understood.1. The journeys of birds and the ideas of man; 2. The rotating world of migratory birds; 3. Summer and winter quarters, Birds in wetlands, Birds which forage on lake and sea bottom, Birds which feed on terrestrial plants, Birds which feed on fish, Birds which obtain food at the water's surface, Birds of prey, Insect-eaters, Seed-eaters, Omnivorous birds, The evolution of bird migration; 4. The migratory journey, Methods of studying bird migration, Flight speed, Migration in flocks, Soaring flight, Flight altitude, Fat as flight fuel, Diurnal and nocturnal migration, Weather and wind, Dangers during the migration; 5. Migratory Fishes of South America
$45 Fish species that migrate within the great rivers of South America support important local fisheries but are little known outside their native range. This book represents the first collection of the work of local scientific experts on these remarkable fish. The authors cover the Upper Paraná, Paraguay-Paraná, Uruguay and São Francisco basins in Brazil, as well as the Brazilian and Colombian Amazon. They discuss not only the principal migratory species and their fascinating relationship with the water cycle in the rivers and wetlands, but also the fisheries they support, and their often precarious conservation status. |

$16.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, Rossitten Bird Observatory, Heligoland Bird Observatory, Col de Bretolet, Jerusalem Bird Observatory, Sempach Bird Observatory, Eyre Bird Observatory, Broome Bird Observatory, Bardsey Bird and Field Observatory. Excerpt: Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The observatory's purpose is to observe the migratory bird populations. It does so through a combination of bird banding, daily censuses and observations. Funding for these activities comes from a variety of sources. In 2002, the Ontario Trillium Foundation awarded the observatory $150 000 to renovate the research station, stabalize the bird banding operations and develop outreach activities. Smaller grants have included a $5 000 donation from the George Cedric Metcalfe Foundation for a modern bird banding facility and a $7 000 grant from the Helen McCrea Peacock Foundation to construct blinds and observation platforms. Scrublands like this are one of the dominant around the Bird ObservatoryPrince Edward Point extends about 10 kilometers into Lake Ontario. Off the edges of the point there are both shoals and deeper waters. The point itself is limestone bedrock with a thin covering of unconsolidated Farmington loam top soil. The point features an interior with primarily grassland and scrubland. Also present are small amounts of wooded swamps, shrub-lined ponds, mixed forests and alvars. Both sandy shores and rocky shores are found along the south beaches of the point, while the north beaches are prominent limestone cliffs. Some of the key species in the ecosystem of the point include Fringed Gentian, Viper's Bugloss, Butterfly Weed, Jewelweed, Black-eyed Susan and Small Yellow Lady's Slipper. Rare vascular plants fo... The Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas
$44.48 The Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas is the capstone of the first comprehensive statewide survey of Arizona's breeding birds. More than 700 surveyors, mainly volunteers, reported a total of 376 bird species during the 1993?2000 field seasons. Of those species, 283 were confirmed as breeding and 18 additional species were suspected of potentially nesting in the state during the atlas survey period. This atlas provides a breeding distribution snapshot for each of Arizona's nesting bird species at the end of the twentieth century. Bird populations change constantly due to environmental factors and human activities. The data compiled in this book will serve as a baseline against which to judge future changes. It also provides a wealth of natural history information. Each of the 270 two-page species accounts contains a color photo of the species and a range map summarizing the breeding distribution records collected during the atlas survey period. The accompanying descriptive text and graphs provide nesting habitat information and a timeline chronicling each bird's breeding phenology and migratory status in Arizona. Another 47 species are briefly discussed. Additional chapters describe atlas methods, results, and Arizona ornithological history, as well as topography, climate, and habitat diversity, which ultimately govern bird species distribution in the state. Useful to land managers and biologists, the atlas will also be a resource for birders and educators and will increase public awareness of Arizona's vast avian life. |

Survival: Saving Endangered Migratory Species
$38.13 Produced in conjunction with a UN agency, this book is both an informative warning against the threat facing many species and a stunning celebration of their beauty. PRuthless exploitation of the natural world has already driven many wild animals to the brink of extinction. Among the most threatened are many migratory species, whether avian, terrestrial or marine. Due to the fact that in most cases these species cross national boundaries, the need for international conservation efforts is particularly urgent. Albatrosses and petrels, migratory water-birds and birds of prey; sharks, whales, dolphins and other marine mammals; West African forest elephants, gorillas and desert antelopes -- these are just some of the key species that are the subject of this meticulously researched, yet easy to read book, which is supported by maps and illustrated with beautiful wildlife photography on nearly every page. |
